Film Trailer Conventions

By studying lots of different film trailers, I have found many common conventions amongst them for the genre of a romantic comedy. All the films have their unique selling points, such as comedy value or it being a classic tale that has been adapted. For romantic comedies, their target audiences vary, but are mainly quite large, aimed generally from teens and up, but with any age group able to watch it. The music tends to be quite bouncy and catchy, instead of dramatic and loud. The soundtrack however differs throughout depending on the part of the film that is being shown. There are lots of close ups on the main characters with big names that will attract the audience, if there are well known famous characters, they are bound to want to watch it more. The pace in the trailers is generally rather fast as there is a lot to slot into a trailer, you have to fit the best bits, in order for the audience to understand what the whole film involves. The trailer is important as has to sell the film. They rarely use a lot of dialogue in the trailers, just a bit to get the point across, but it is snappy. It mainly shows a few funny points. There is always a man as a voice over who tells you the story of what is going on and introduces you to the film. All film trailers wait until the end to show the actual name of the film and to say the famous people in it. So once the audience have seen a summarised version of the film and been told what is going on, they show you at the end. So there are many conventions that need to be considered when making a film trailer.
